Bangladesh has launched a nationwide campaign to inform residents about the legal and financial consequences of participating in online gambling. The initiative follows the implementation of the new Gambling Prevention Act on July 1.
Updated Regulatory Framework
The updated legislation replaces the previous framework established in 1867. It now extends regulatory coverage to online gambling, sports betting, online casinos, cryptocurrency wagering, and associated financial offenses. The campaign is jointly organized by Bangladesh Bank, the Criminal Investigation Department, and the digital payment provider bKash.Penalties and Enforcement Measures
Violations of the new act carry penalties of up to two years imprisonment and fines reaching $813,000. Authorities may also detain individuals without a judicial warrant. Law enforcement agencies have been granted expanded monitoring capabilities, allowing them to track activity across websites, mobile applications, social networks, and payment networks. Officials can block access to unauthorized platforms and intercept related transaction flows.Government representatives stated that the awareness effort targets players, platform operators, advertisers, and any entities involved in the unregulated market.
